    Dear Patricia

You wrote: "I am an alternate route student and I am looking for an institution that will allow me to take the required graduate psych courses without matriculating.  I have intensively researched in-person and online options but so far I have not been successful--all require matriculation.  Can anyone offer suggestions?  Thank you."

When I completed my alternate route studies, I was able to get my additional graduate level coursework in various counseling/psych classes at California State University, Long Beach and California State University, Fullerton. I'm not sure where you are at but the CSU system has something called "Open University" - people are allowed to petition individual instructors for permission to add a class - but obviously are low person on the totem pole - can only add if there is room after all matriculated students have enrolled. You may want to investigate "open university" options locally.  Good luck!

Regarding graduate psych courses for non-matric student, Walden University online (the only CACREP-accredited online MA Counseling program) allows you to take at least a few courses non-matric (I think it's 3 or 4). Also, many MA Counseling programs (at least in my area East Coast) have CAGS= Certificate in Advanced Graduate Studies in counseling programs where you can put together your own selection of courses, up to 4 courses. Many counselors do CAGS to get the additional 12 semester credits to bring their 48-credit Master's up to the 60 credits required by some states. This is recent info so I hope it will be helpful to you.
