      I have been working with adolescents on an inpatient psych unit for 15 years. I have chosen to do single gender groups only. I find it gives both the girls and the boys the space to explore their issues without the distractions of the other sex.  For girls, body image issues are so strong, and fear of judgement is there always, but it appears to be heightened around the opposite sex. For boys, they feel a lot less self-conscious and more willing to dance for themselves, and not to “show off”.

    Information about adopted children and DMT

    Dear friends,

    I am preparing a project to work with adopted children. I haven't found almost anything about it. Do you have any articles or references to articles or books about DMT and adopted children? Actually, any type of resource will be helpful.

    I would also like to measure the effects of DMT on these children. Do you have any recommendation about methods, tests, etc. for children and/or adolescents?

    It's been a long time since I worked with adolescents but I will share my experience as a fledgling DMT in the 80's.  I worked as a 'consultant' in an inpatient adolescent unit. Began by working with co-ed groups and really struggled.  After a few months of work and supervision I realized I needed to have separate groups for girls and boys. This was so successful.  The girls were immediately engaged in body awareness and dancing; the boys loved more active play-oriented directives but were also able to explore expressive movement.  Clearly the added pressure of raging hormones and body self-consciousness made it very difficult for the kids to engage freely.   The experience was very profound for me as it forced me to assess my own boundaries and needs very carefully and to advocate for what I believed was best clinical practice in that setting.
