The Association has always distinguished between dance/movement therapists prepared to work in professional settings within a team under supervision, and those prepared for the responsibilities of working independently in private practice, or providing supervision.

DTR: DANCE THERAPIST REGISTERED

DTR is granted to individuals who have completed a master’s degree in dance/movement therapy or a master’s degree in a related field plus 45 credits of specific dance/movement therapy curriculum. All candidates must complete a 700 hour supervised clinical internship in dance/movement therapy. Therapists with this title are fully qualified to work in a professional treatment system. 50 hours of Continuing Education every five years is required to maintain the DTR. Scroll down this page for information on Continuing Education and the CE Filing Form

ADTR: ACADEMY OF DANCE THERAPISTS REGISTERED

ADTR is awarded only after DTRs have completed 3, 640 hours of supervised, professional clinical work. ADTRs are qualified to teach, provide supervision, and engage in private practice. Many ADTRs hold state licenses, National Certified Counselor (NCC) status, and doctoral degrees. Therapists with this title are fully qualified to teach, provide supervision, and engage in private practice. 100 hours of Continuing Education every five years is required to maintain the ADTR. Scroll down this page for information on Continuing Education and the CE Filing Form.

Dance/movement therapists follow the Code of Ethics and Ethical Standards of Practice of ADTA. Click here to link to this vital information

Information about credentials and the appropriate forms are provided below in the downloadable packets.

Note from the ADTA Board of Directors - May, 2008
The ADTA Board of Directors encourages every individual with a DTR to pursue the ADTR level of registry. ADTR supervision is a cornerstone of professional development for dance/movement therapists, and affordable ADTR supervision supports growth in the profession of dance/movement therapy. We recognize the right of ADTR supervisors to charge fees that are commensurate with their expertise and services, and we also encourage ADTR supervisors to use a sliding fee scale when possible, so affordable supervision is available to individuals with the DTR credential.

CONTINUING EDUCATION INFORMATION

                   ADTR

Definitions:  Continuing Education is understood to mean activities which the professional seeks in order to expand dance/movement therapy knowledge and skills. Continuing education (CE) hours are defined as actual clock hours of participation in an activity.

Deadlines: Each ADTR is responsible for accruing 100 CE hours every five years beginning the year of being awarded the ADTR. Anyone who was awarded the ADTR before June 30, 2000 was required to file l00 CE hours with the ADTA National Office using the Continuing Education Filing Form (available below or by contacting the office) by July 1, 2005 (CE hours may have been accrued from April 1, 1999.).  Prior to the expiration date, an ADTR may send a request in writing to the ADTA National Office for a six-month grace period to complete the 100 CE hours.

Documentation: A Continuing Education folder is sent to each ADTR upon registry and every five years thereafter. It is the ADTR’s responsibility to keep an accurate record and required documentation of continuing education activities in this folder.

Please note: All Continuing Education Files are subject to a random audit. KEEP YOUR DOCUMENTATION but do not send documentation to the office unless specifically requested

Continuing Education Filing Form:
Each ADTR will submit the Continuing Education Filing form, certified by a Notary Public and the $25 filing fee postmarked by the expiration date. Foreign Members Only:  Notary public not required, however your signature must be witnessed and your form co-signed and dated. The $25 filing fee must be submitted in U.S. funds .   To download the CE Filing Form, click here.

ADTR/NCC: National Certified Counselor re-certification is through NBCC every five years. Continuing Education on dance/movement therapy and related topics is an approved content area for ADTR/NCCs. ADTRs who are also NCCs are responsible to meet NBCC requirements for NCC recertification.

CATEGORIES OF CE ACTIVITIES          MAXIMUM IN 5 YEARS

1. workshops, conferences, seminars       100

2. college/university courses                    100

3. publication activities                              50

4. research activity                                    50

5. advocacy/leadership                              50

6. supervision/consultation                         20

7. other                                                    20

As reported by Central M-A-L Stacey Hurst in ADTA Newsletter Vol. 38, no. 3-4 -- much of your ADTR CE hours also count for your NCC. Both systems use clock hours. NBCC requires that CE workshops cover one of the following categories:

§         counseling theory

§         human growth and development

§         the helping relationship, group dynamics and processes

§         life-style and career development

§         appraisal of individuals

§         research and evaluation

§         professional orientation

ADTA is an approved NBCC provider so attendance at 4 two hour ADTA conference workshops that fit under these categories counts as 8 contact hours for both ADTA and NCC.

In addition, ADTA chapters and ADTRs can request a CE procedures packet from the National office to provide CE hours for workshops at chapter meetings and other functions. NBCC and ADTA both allow CE from College/University courses, seminars, workshops, conferences, publication activities, supervision, and leadership. Both ADTA and NBCC issue folders that specify CE information. If you study these folders, you will see that most of your CE hours apply to both organizations.

Finally, if you hold a state counseling license, most of your NBCC approved provider CE hours will also be honored by your state board. So there is no need to sweat! Continuing Education hours are multipurpose!
