Dance/Movement Therapy for a Diverse Society: Evidence and Ideas
October 30 through November 2, 2008
Omni Austin Hotel Downtown
Dance/movement therapists serve in a diverse and expanding world community. For the 2008 conference we invite papers, workshops, panels, posters and presentations that address questions of diversity in dance/movement therapy. Through conference seminars and plenary events, we are working to create and offer a rich and multi-layered experience for those who attend. As an evidence-based mental health discipline, we will examine what we know about the impact of our work in a pluralistic society, and what it is that we need to learn more about through research, study and professional preparation.
How do differences in gender, sexuality, Culture, ethnicity, age, physical abilities, socio-economic status and religion impact and inform the practice of dance/movement therapy?
How are dance/movement therapy research, theory and practice responsive to the needs of an increasingly diverse client population and society? How can the field develop and strengthen in this regard?
How do cross-cultural applications of dance/movement therapy expand the body of knowledge and ways of delivering DMT services?
We will examine the question of diversity within the profession as well: who are dance/movement therapists and how can the field grow towards more diversity within?
Dance/movement therapists come from a wide range of backgrounds in the art of dance.
How do varying aesthetics and body-based ways of knowing, rooted in a myriad of dance and movement traditions, inform the creative, psychic and interpersonal processes at the heart of DMT practice?
Preparations are underway for the ADTA 43rd Annual Conference. Through conference seminars and plenary events, we are working to create and offer a rich and multi-layered experience for those who attend. Texas has a group of DMTs who are eager for all to come and experience the flavor of Austin! They say Austin, Texas is “hip and trendy, yet in a vintage sort of way. It's high-tech and laid-back.
It's politically charged and culturally rich. It's eclectic by nature and creative by design. Most of all, it's a place where people like to have a good time” (http://www.austintexas.org/visitors/about_austin). How could you stay home?
Many proposals were submitted and the National Review Panel (blind review of presentations) is in the process of reading and scoring the proposals. Letters will be sent to the selected presenters in the next few weeks.
