BC-DMT Recertification / Continuing Education (Revised 2020)

All certificants must Recertify their credential every 5 years.  At the time of recertification, they must attest to accrual of Continuing Education (CE) hours.

Continued Education (CE) ensures excellence and professionalism in dance/movement therapy by fostering on-going education and growth; promoting quality clinical care, expanding research and theory development; and helping to promote the field of dance/movement therapy nationally and internationally.

Continuing Education is understood to mean activities that expand the dance/ movement therapist’s knowledge and skills. CE hours are defined as the actual participation and clock hours of that activity.

Recertification Details and Requirements

The Dance/Movement Therapy Certification Board (DMTCB) requires Board Certified Dance/Movement Therapist (BC-DMTs) to complete 100 hours of Continuing Education (CE) every five years to maintain their Board Certification.

Recertification Details and Requirements:

Each BC-DMT is responsible for accruing 100 CE hours (or 10 CE hours for Reduced Practice-BC-DMT) beginning five- years after being granted board certification and every five years thereafter.

  • It is the BC-DMT’s responsibility to keep an accurate record as well as all the required documentation for their CE activities.
  • Recertification requires the completion and submission of a CE Recertification Filing Form and payment of the maintenance fee. The actual CE documentation should NOT be submitted unless the Certificant is selected to be audited.
  • International Members: The $25.00 filing fee must be submitted in U.S. funds.
  • If the CE hours are not submitted by the end of the extension period, the BC-DMT will be suspended. This means that the individual is bound by the ADTA Code of Ethics to neither practice as a BC-DMT nor list the BC-DMT beside their name. Upon filing the required CE hours and paying fees due, the BC-DMT credential will be reinstated.

Audit Details

  • Each year, 10% of all recertificants are subject to a random audit. The Audit notification will include instructions for the auditing process. Do not send ANY documentation to the office.

Transition from R-DMT to BC-DMT

  • Certificants holding the R-DMT are required to recertify every 5-years. However, if they apply for and receive the BC-DMT within that time frame, they start a new 5-year recertification cycle. Any CE hours accrued as an R-DMT prior to that date can be credited toward the BC-DMT requirement.

Providing CE Credit Hours

  • ADTA Chapters and BC-DMTs can request CE credit approval for workshops or other designated activities initiated by the Chapter or the BC-DMT. Contact DMTCB Credentials Coordinator ([email protected]) for further information and details about the application process.

Many DMT CE offerings may also count towards the National Certified Counselors (NCCs) and LCAT recertification CE requirements. This includes workshops offered at the ADTA conference or live webinars offered through the ADTA.
