CREDENTIAL RENEWAL/RECERTIFICATION/CONTINUING EDUCATION/LAPSED CREDENTIALS (Revised 2023)
CREDENTIAL RENEWAL
R-DMTs and BC-DMTs must renew their credential yearly. When they renew they may adjust their practice status to reflect their current work level.
The following status options are available to all R-DMTs and BC-DMTs:
Full Professional Status
- Candidates with this status may use the “R-DMT” or “BC-DMT” designation.
- R-DMTs may practice as clinicians and receive supervision
- BC-DMTs may practice as clinicians, teach, advise, and provide supervision/consultation.
- Candidates must change their status using the Professional Status Update Form
- Candidates must continue to adhere to the ADTA Code of Ethics.
- There is no time limitation for retaining this status.
- Yearly professional maintenance fee: $190.00 for R-DMT/ $215.00 for BC-DMT.
- Credential fees for non-ADTA Members: $240.00 for R-DMT/$275 for BC-DMT
- Recertification requirements includes:
- Continuing Education requirements (20% of total CE hours required to be Ethics and Multicultural/DEI -J topics)
- R-DMT - 50 hours every 5-years (10 CE hrs/year: 2 CE hrs/year Ethics and Multicultural/DEI -J)
- BC-DMT - 100 hours every 5-years (20 CE hrs/year: 4 CE hrs/year must be Multicultural/DEI-J/Ethics)
- Submission of a Recertification Filing Form attesting that the DMT has completed the requisite CE hours.
- Fee payment ($25.00)
- If selected, compliance with Recertification Audit
Reduced Practice Status
- Candidates with this status may not work as a dance/movement therapist more than 10 direct contact paid clinical hours per week.
- R-DMTs may receive supervision
- BC-DMTs may teach, advise, and provide supervision
- Candidates must change their status using the Professional Status Update Form
- Candidates with this status may use the “R-DMT” or “BC-DMT” designation.
- Candidates must continue to adhere to the ADTA Code of Ethics.
- There is no time limitation for retaining this status.
- Yearly professional maintenance fee: $65.00 for R-DMT/ $75.00 for BC-DMT.
- Credential fees for non-ADTA Members: $90.00 for R-DMT/$205.00 for BC-DMT.
- Recertification requirements include:
- Continuing Education (CE) requirement (20% of total hours required to be Ethics and Multicultural
- R-DMT – 25 hours every 5-years (5 CE hrs/year: 1 CE hr/year Ethics and Multicultural/DEI -J)
- BC-DMT - 50 hours every 5-years (10 CE hrs/year: 2 CE hrs/year must be Multicultural/DEI-J/Ethics)
- Submission of Recertification Filing Form and fee payment ($25.00).
- If selected, compliance with Recertification Audit
Temporary-Inactive Status
- There is a 4-year time limit to this status.
- Candidates must change their status using the Professional Status Update Form
- Candidates with this status may not practice as a dance/movement therapist, teach, advise, or provide supervision. If they are R-DMTs they may receive supervision.
- Candidates with this status must use the “R-DMT/BC-DMT Inactive” designation, rather than “R-DMT/BC-DMT.”
- Candidates must continue to adhere to the ADTA Code of Ethics.
- Yearly professional maintenance fee: $30.00.
- No requirement for continuing education hours during the period of being temporary inactive.
- Once the Temporary-Inactive status has expired, the R-DMT/BC-DMT must resume accruing CE hours. (Ethics and Multicultural/DEI topics encouraged)
- The amount of required CE hours will be pro-rated based on the Certificant’s prior recertification year (which is not changed to reflect the change to temporary inactive status.)
- If a Certificant does not reactivate their credential at the end of 4-years their credential will be considered lapsed. (see below for lapsed credential reinstatement requirements.)
- Requires submission of Professional Status Update Form.
Retired Status
- Candidates with this status may NOT practice clinically, teach, advise, or provide supervision/ consultation.
- Requires submission of Professional Status Update Form.
- Candidates with this status may use the “R-DMT/BC-DMT Retired” designation, rather than “R-DMT/BC-DMT.”
- Candidates must continue to adhere to the ADTA Code of Ethics.
- No time limitation for retaining this status.
- No yearly professional maintenance fee.
- No Continuing Education (CE) requirement
Recertification Requirements:

- occurs every 5 years, starting the year the highest certificate is attained
- To recertify the Certificant must:

Submit a Recertification Filing Form verifying that the DMT’s completion of the required CE hours.

Recertification Notification and the link to the online form is emailed to Certificants in mid-February and due by April 15.

Extension Requests must be filed by May 15 of the recertification year. Recertification Extension Request Form

Pay a $25.00 (USD) maintenance fee through the ADTA website and must be submitted in US funds.

Each year, 10% of all Certificants recertifying are subject to a random audit.

The Audit notification will include instructions for the auditing process. Do not send ANY documentation to the office.
Continuing Education Requirements:
Continued Education (CE) promotes excellence and professionalism in dance/movement therapy by:
- Fostering on-going education and growth
- Promoting quality clinical care, expanding research and theory development
- Helping to promote the field of dance/movement therapy nationally and internationally.
- Continuing Education(CE) hours enhances knowledge and competence can include:
- Attending workshops, conferences, seminars.
- Taking college/university courses.
- Publication activities.
- Research activities.
- Advocacy/leadership involvement.
- Receiving BC-DMT supervision (for R-DMTs) or providing supervision/consultation (for BC-DMTs).
- Other activities such as taking classes or engaging in professional reading or research.
- CE hours reflect the actual clock hours of participation in any activity.
- All accrued CE credits must be uploaded and saved in CE Tracker.
- If the CE hours are not submitted their credential will be considered as lasped. This means that the individual is bound by the ADTA Code of Ethics to neither practice or list their credential in any way. Upon filing the required CE hours and paying the fees, the R- DMT credential will be reinstated.

LAPSED CREDENTIAL
All professional DMTs are required to maintain registry continuously. Failure to do so beyond the 90-day grace period following their recertification due date, will result in the credential being viewed as lapsed.
- An exception to this policy is If the Certificant has changed their status to Temporary Inactive by completing and submitting the Change of Status form. (See Temporary Inactive status (above) for more details.)
- There is a 4-year time limit to the Temporary Inactive status.
- Professional DMTs who have lapsed credentials may not identify themselves as an R-DMT or a BC-DMT.
- R-DMT may not practice clinically.
- BC-DMTs may not practice clinically, teach, supervise, or advise
- Reinstatement of the R-DMT/BC-DMT professional credential includes:
- Fee payment for each lapsed year, not to exceed a total of four (4) years. (See lapsed credential table for specific amount per year. (see below for lapsed credential reinstatement requirements.)
- Complete additional required CE hours (including Ethics and Multicultural/DEI topics), accrued within the past two (2) years. (See lapsed credential table for specific amount per year and instructions for where to send CE. (see below for lapsed credential reinstatement requirements.)
- When their credential has been reinstated, the Certificant must also:
- Pay the current yearly credential renewal fee.
- Have their 5-year recertification date reset to the year they reinstate their credential.
- Begin accruing the CE hour required for recertification 5-years from the date of their reinstatement. (See status recertification requirements for more specific details.

To apply for reinstatement of a credential that has lapsed for 10 or more years, the applicant must:
1. Submit an essay (2-4 pages) discussing (a) the reasons for the lapse, (b) the reasons for their current request to be reinstated, (c) a description of how they plan to use and apply DMT in their current work.
2. Complete 40 hrs. of Continuing Education (10 hrs.(R-DMT) /20 hrs (BC-DMT) must focus on DEI-J, Ethics, or Multicultural topics.
3. Pay a $250 reinstatement fee.

* Temporary Inactive Status: Certificants are encouraged to consider temporarily de-activating their credential for a maximum of 4 years. On Temporary Inactive Status, they may not practice as a Dance/Movement Therapist and may be ineligible to teach or supervise (as per the Educational Standards).
Relinquishment of the Credential
Reinstatement of DMT Credential
- Reinstatement to active status from any of these status options or from relinquished status is obtainable through:
- Applying for reinstatement to the Dance/Movement Therapy Certification Board by completing the Professional Status Update Form.
- Completing required CE hours
- Fees: The regular CE filing fee is $25.00; Reinstatement to active status from suspension is $10.00 in addition to 1⁄2 of the annual maintenance fee for each year that the credential was suspended and the full maintenance fee for the year of reinstatement.
