Ethics Info

Intro to File Ethical Report Page
When a situation arises involving questionable ethics, the ADTA encourages those involved to explore and attempt to resolve it by talking to one another and sharing perspectives, understanding, and lived experiences before contacting the Standards & Ethics Committee for support. The ADTA Standards & Ethics Committee offers support if resolution cannot be achieved through conversation or when a conversation isn’t feasible due to extenuating circumstances.

From here, you are guided to complete a contact form for one of the four levels of support needed, as listed below. Either the Standard & Ethics Committee (S&E) or the Dance/Movement Therapy Certification Board will review your case accordingly. Please read the Procedures on “How to Resolve Situations Involving Questionable Ethics” (2022) and the current ADTA Code of Ethics by downloading the PDF files below

ADTA Code of Ethics

Levels of Support Involving Questionable Ethics:
Ethical Awareness
  1. Ethical Awareness informs the Standards & Ethics Committee of a situation that could possibly involve questionable ethics or something you’d like to bring to the S&E’s attention. Please provide as much detailed information as possible to help the Committee understand.
  2. The Standards & Ethics committee will document receipt of the awareness only.
  3. No further action is required by S&E or you. The awareness will be taken into consideration for future situations involving ethics.
Ethical Matter
  1. The Standards & Ethics Committee reviews the email and assesses the information to determine if the situation should be considered an Ethical Concern or an Ethical Complaint
  2. Criteria for making this determination is based on whether the complainant, the respondent, and/or another individual (such as a consumer) is at potential risk for physical or emotional harm.
  3. The S&E Committee recommends a mediated conversation between the complainant and the respondent in order to seek resolution
Ethical Concern
  1. A member of the Standard & Ethics Sub-Committee emails the complainant and the respondent to schedule a mutually agreeable date and time to meet for a mediated conversation.
  2. If possible, the mediated conversation may involve: a mediator, sharing relevant information, bargaining, and reaching a shared agreement.
  3. The Ethical Concern is closed when a mutually agreeable resolution is determined.
Ethical Complaint
  1. Please complete the Ethical situation form providing as much detail as possible including specific ethical codes related to the charge.
  2. Standards and Ethics and possibly the Dance/Movement Therapy Certification Board (DMTCB) will contact you (the complainant) and the respondent notifying you both that the Ethical Complaint is now the responsibility of the DMTCB
  3. In the form, you are prompted to provide information regarding the complaint, your statement and witness statements, information regarding the respondent, supporting documents, and additional materials to support your ethical complaint.
  4. The DMTCB will investigate the complaint further with the S&E Committee and will contact you accordingly regarding the next steps.
  5. If more support is required before submitting a complaint (i.e. anonymity) please contact S&E at [email protected].
