#GivingTuesday

About #GivingTuesday:

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Observed on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. Since its inaugural year in 2012, #GivingTuesday has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy.

Created in 2012 by 92nd Street Y—a cultural center in New York City that, since 1874, has been bringing people together around the values of service and giving back— #GivingTuesday connects diverse groups of individuals, communities, and organizations around the world for one common purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving. A team of influencers and founding partners joined forces—collaborating across sectors, offering expertise and working tirelessly—to launch #GivingTuesday and have continued to shape, grow, and strengthen the movement.

#GivingTuesday harnesses the potential of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities; it provides a platform for them to encourage the donation of time, resources, and talents to address local challenges. It also brings together the collective power of a unique blend of partners— nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses, and corporations, as well as families and individuals—to encourage and amplify small acts of kindness.

As a global movement, #GivingTuesday unites countries around the world by sharing our capacity to care for and empower one another. 35,000+ United States Organizations, 85 countries including small businesses, nonprofits, government agencies, and major corporations are involved with #GivingTuesday. https://www.givingtuesday.org/

About ADTA’s #GivingTuesday Grant Program:

The American Dance Therapy Association’s #GivingTuesday mission is:

  • to provide dance/movement therapy to a variety of populations who would benefit from the multifaceted positive effects of DMT
  • to educate the public about DMT
  • to increase opportunities for members of ADTA (April 2019)

The Rationale:

This partnership between the ADTA and the MCF began in 2015. The projects have provided dance movement therapy services to veterans, refugees, and youth throughout the USA. The outcomes have been recorded in videos, blogs, reports, and surveys. This year’s project Moving Towards Evidence Based Practice is focused on compiling data from previous projects to determine a usable method for future #GT research. The $1500 Researcher grant will be awarded to a dance movement therapist who has the skills to research, analyze, and write about the outcomes of these projects. The outcome will fulfill two aspects of the #GT mission: to educate the public and to increase opportunities for ADTA members.
